Sexy images such as this in promotion of Inferno DR 2013 have been circulating the net for months, but there is nothing sexy about the event being cancelled a day before--leaving attendees stranded. |
One of the biggest urban pride events of the summer,
Inferno Dominican Republicwas scheduled to kick off this past Thursday, August 29. It was being hailed as the event of the summer according to their official website.
From Thursday, August 29th to Monday, September 2nd, prepare yourself to experience The Royal Service at Inferno Dominican Republic as we celebrate our 5th Year Anniversary. In the beautiful city of Punta Cana, come and find out why this location is one of the highest in demand vacation spots in the entire Caribbean.
With your host Entertainer Buttafly Soul, prepare for a weekend of exquisite food, pumping DJs, hot events, cool Caribbean waters splashing on white sands... only for the grown & sexy. The fun doesn’t stop for five days and four nights of all you can drink and all you eat of Dominican, French, Japanese, Mexican, and American cuisine. Come celebrate our 5th Year Anniversary of Inferno Dominican Republic… come and experience THE ROYAL SERVICE!
When some guest arrived in the Dominican Republic a day early on Wednesday to allot time to settle in before the festivities, they found themselves to be stranded at the airport with no transportation. Transportation that was included in the packages sold by the events' organizers.
After days of backlash, rumors, and public scrutiny, event founder
Will Williams [shown above wearing the red cape] released a statement a day after his original announcement of the events' cancellation:
To friends and patrons of Inferno Dominican Republic:
While I appreciate everyone that has spoken on my behalf, I feel that every patron that has supported Inferno Dominican Republic deserves to hear from me. I am sincerely apologetic for what has occurred. No words can express the pain that I feel as a result of the postponement of the event this weekend. Inferno DR is the first and longest running event of the Inferno franchise and my personal favorite. Please know that I would never do anything to intentionally destroy it or tarnish the Inferno brand.
This outcome has been devastating to me personally and was certainly nothing that I foresaw coming. Until the final moments, I believed whole-heartedly that the payment discrepancies between Inferno Dominican Republic and the Melia Caribe Tropical would be resolved in a manner to not effect the event or the patrons. I looked forward to executing the largest Inferno DR event ever and even coordinating our first ever marriage proposal.
Rather than point the finger, I take FULL accountability for what occurred and for resolving it. Please know that I care about every patron and shall proceed to do everything that I can to rectify the situation. In the coming days, representatives of Inferno Dominican Republic, LLC shall be contacting every patron of the event in order to resolve their accounts.
When Inferno DR began I was told that "this" market could not afford this type of event and no five star hotel would allow it to take place on its premises. However because of "this" market, Inferno not only exists in Dominican Republic, but now in Canada and for three years now also in Puerto Rico as well. That it has been so successful for so many years, I am both humbled and grateful.
I attribute the success of Inferno DR to the support of its patrons and promotional partners such as Zekeera Belton of A2Zee Entertainment and Lonnell Williams of 3LWTV. Like the patrons that come every year for Inferno DR, A2Zee Entertainment and 3LWTV are merely a part of the Inferno family and have no financial interest in its success. It is because of this sense of family that I will do everything in my power to rebuild trust in Inferno DR and again I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate situation.
Sincerely,
Will WilliamsInferno Dominican Republic, LLC
Despite the minor mishap, some attendees decided to take a taxi to their hotel,
The Melia Caribe Tropical, only to find out on arrival that there were to reservations for them in the hotel's system.
Shortly after attendees started alerting their friends via social media, Inferno D.R. founder Will Williams released the following statement via Facebook on August 28 (a day prior to when the event was scheduled to commence):
Inferno DR 2013 It is with our sincerest apologies that we regrettably have to inform you that we are postponing Inferno Dominican Republic 2013. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused. It was our intention to provide each client with an amazing experience but due to unforeseen circumstances that will not be the case at this time.
We have attempted to rectify the situation but unfortunately we have exhausted all remedies.
You will receive special offers and updates about the Inferno DR trip throughout the year.
Thank You!
The event was promoted all the way up until August 27, but on August 28, the promoters were scrambling to answer the disgruntled concerns of vacationers. One rep on the Inferno D.R. Women site responded:
Ladies- This is what I know so far: They are working on the refunds. If you purchased the travel insurance you'll need to file a claim with the insurance company. If you did not, they will give an update on the refund status. That's the latest info I have as of now. If I get more info I'll gladly share.
Promotional partner
Lonnell Williams [shown right] of 3LWtv who serves as a media representative for Inferno D.R.
released the following statement, August 29 on behalf of Will Williams:
"Good morning fam! Thanks again for all of your love and support. I want you to know that I'm working diligently with the Inferno team to make sure you hear the truth. I am in no way an official spokesperson for the group, I am a media promotional partner. I have learned this morning that an official statement will be coming today. There is a lot of misinformation circulating but rest assured they are working to answer your questions truthfully. As I learn new details, I'll also share them.
They are working on the refunds. If you purchased the travel insurance you’ll need to file a claim with the insurance company. If you did not, they will give an update on the refund status. That’s the latest info I have as of now. If I get more info I’ll gladly share.
Trust me, I’m doing my best to keep people informed. Will has not been able to take calls because he is dedicating all of his resources to resolve this. It’s hell on this end too.”
Before Will Williams released his official statement [above], Lonnell Williams did his best to save face:
"To all who have reached out to me today in light and love know that you are truly appreciated. I’ve been in overdrive trying to assist with the communications regarding the postponement of InfernoDR 2013. At this time I don’t have much more information other than what I’ve shared on the Inferno Dominican Republic Men and Inferno Dominican Republic Women Facebook pages.
Most of you have asked me where is Will Williams ? He has been grappling with the devastating affects of today’s announcement. I’m hoping he will be in a position to make an address soon. As further details become available of course I will share. In the meantime please continue to hold everyone involved (Will, The Inferno Team, patrons, friends, supporters & myself) up in the healing power of prayer. It is much needed and appreciated. Thank you."
According to another unsatisfied consumer who contacted the hotel, The Melia Caribe Tropical had cancelled the event months ago for non-payment. Lawyer, reality show star, and creator of the first gay black reality series
Tha LifeGeorge Smith was outraged as he had planned on attending:
"Show us this is not typical black gay business where the consumer suffers because we trust you promoters and event planners. Speaking as a lawyer and after speaking with the convention manager Alexander Beato at the hotel and him informing me that the deposit was never paid by the group and that they are trying reach you guys to get the payment, conflicts with what you guys are telling us."
Raheem Anderson confirmed Smith's statements, breaking down what the promoters and it's affiliates had actually done:
"I am outraged by today's event that the organizers of Inferno Dominican Republic Men took advantage of the African American Gay Community. This is a travesty at best. Point blank I am calling a spade a spade. After talking with the hotel and having knowledge of the entertainment business, it is apparent that there is a lie being told.
The hotel's convention manager stated that the room deposit was never paid, so this means that when people were paying, someone was pocketing the money.
Furthermore, the deposit was due August 7, 2013, meaning the organizers knew before today [August 28] this was an issue. So that you know how this business works, you have a 30/60/90 day cancellation clause to mitigate losses in cases like this and in fact if they had paid as people were paying installments the hotel would have honored what was paid and simply collected the difference in this situation from the participants who wanted to continue with their trip.
Since no money was paid that's why they are requiring payment for your room. I say this good luck thinking people are getting full refunds "WAIT FOR IT". This is why we as African American Gay Business owners have a hard time getting support for events like this. Proper business practices would have allowed you guys to pay the hotel directly and the Inferno Organizers would have been written a check for their profit portion by the hotel. This just tells me that somebody did not have seed money for this event and dipped in the cookie jar for their personal gain. This is a mis-use of trust..."
Attendees who couldn't reach those affiliated with the organization, began contacting models affiliated with the event such as
Stanley Etoty [shown left], in an effort to sort fact from fiction. However Etoty was just as clueless as everyone else:
"I’m truly sorry to hear of this you all. I have been receiving calls, text and fb messages all day. I do not have any answers to you’re questions though. I have no idea what is going on. I just pray that everyone is well and all of this will be rectified.
I am suppose to be a host at the event but I wasn’t book. I haven’t heard anything in months. A few others that were supposed to be booked contacted me asking if I heard anything a few days ago but that’s it.
I’ll be in the ATL. With all due respect boss man knows what he needs to do. Will Williams this is your brand, you’re name. You’re staff needs to do what they are paid for or be replaced. People shouldn’t be calling me asking questions that Inferno & Worldwide Travel Partners staff should be answering. It’s not fair to customer or to me.
Peace, love and blessings alwaysStanP.S.I’ll be in ATL #turnup
In light of the unfortunate circumstances, the same day that
Will Williams announced the "cancellation" of the event, the hotel pulled all stops to ensure that those who are stranded in the Domincan Republic, and those who were traveling there later on in the week, were/are accommodated.
Good evening
We are really sorry that your event has been cancelled, we heard that some of you are coming by yourself, and we want to offer you a better rate so you don't have to take a cap which is 35 per way, and with us you will only pay 15 USD per person for the ROUND TRIP, we will be at the airport with a INFERNO sign to take you to Melia.
For the Activities (we never received any payment from WTP): Waterworld cruise, Adventutre buggis and Zipline. We also want to offer you a special price of 60.00 per person per activity.
Please let us know your comments ASAP in order to organize the buses and activities to give you a VIP service.
Melia also sent out notifications offering nightly rates between $95-$275. The outcome of this will be one to watch, but at least those who can't make it to Inferno, can travel to Atlanta Black Gay Pride, I'm sure they are benefiting tremendously from the irresponsible acts of others.
